Based on the light novel by Ryogo Narita, Baccano! is set in various eras of the fictional United States, most notably the Prohibition Era, often from multiple points of view.
The series begins with a historian and his apprentice discussing a case centered on an express train in the Americas that left a trail of blood; the two can’t decide where to start or who will be the protagonist, so “Baccano!” moves along in a nonlinear narrative that jumps from place to place. The complex characters range from the psychotic to the funny, making the series fascinating.
The animated adaptations have been mostly well received, with critics praising the plots, characters, animation, and music. They also described the animation as humorous, sometimes cruel, but almost always entertaining. They also said it has great costume design, a great OST, and excellent voice acting that translates well to the English dubbed version.
Active animator Davey C. Jones called “Baccano! to “Pulp Fiction,” and even compares the story to “Pulp Fiction,” saying it is a story that will change the way we look at anime. Baccano!” is available on online streaming sites such as Crunchyroll and 9anime. It is also possible to download episodes or record them for offline viewing with the help of VideoPower RED software.
