The Rising of the Shield Hero anime series was adapted from a light novel by Anego Yusagi. Published as a web novel in Japan, it became one of the “Top 10 Anime to Watch in 2023.” The story follows a typical Japanese college student, Naofumi Iwatani, who discovers a wave of monsters and a book about four heroes set to protect a country and an alternate world. During his journey, Naofumi was betrayed and abandoned by his partner. With no friends to rely on and nowhere to go, Naofumi is left alone in his new land. However, he meets a merchant and decides to buy a half-raccoon and half-human girl, Raftalia, who overcomes her past trauma with Naofumi. The two then begin their journey to a new world.
When The Rising of the Shield Hero began airing in North America, the first episode was controversial for its depiction of slavery, but that did not stop the excellent episodes from continuing with generally favorable comments. Critics said the series seemed to have gotten past its initial problematic mountain range and then came a more satisfying storyline.
At the 2019 Crunchyroll Expo, it was announced that the series would be given a second and third season, with Masato Jimbo replacing original creator Takao Abo as director. However, the rest of the staff remains the same, with Kinema Junpo hired by DR Movie to produce the animation.
