The FLCL Animated Series (or Fooly Cooly) may have had only six episodes in its original version, but critics rewrote the animation rulebook with references to modern pop culture, including John Woo, The Matrix, and even South Park More than two decades later, the “FLCL” series still stands out for its satirical, nonsensical storyline, expressed through abstract visuals and niche jokes that would have been lost in translation were it not for a great team.
Written by Yoji Enokido and produced by the FLCL Production Committee, the film tells the story of Naota Nantaba, a 12-year-old boy whose suburban life is disrupted by the appearance of a mysterious girl, Haruko Haruhara. Reflecting Naota’s chaotic emotions as he enters adolescence, each story is intentionally confusing.
Despite its chaotic storyline, the “FLCL” anime series remains one of the best anime of all time. Its popularity is so great that two new seasons were released in 2016 and 2018, and two additional seasons have been ordered by Adult Swim for 2022 and will be released later this year. Viewers are already excited. It’s hard to describe the series as it is, but what people do know is that it works, and its creativity and cleverness are nothing short of fun.
